Ranting and Complaints of Life in Taiwan

Not Your Typical “Enka” Star

Not many people in Japan listens to Enka nowadays. For those of you who has no idea what Enka is, just think of it as a form of melodramatic type of folk/country music. On a side note, this is like the national music for grand parents (for both Japanese and Japanese-educated generations). How popular is Enka? Just turn on NHK during New Year’s Eve and watch the Red/White singing contest, and you’ll be sure to get a good dose of Enka singers.

Jero's album

Now what’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you see this CD? Hip Hop Singer? Rapper? Sounds very logical to me (well, those were the things that comes to MY mind when I saw this CD for the first time).

Meet JERO, the newest and arguably the most popular Enka star of the new generation. To be exact, the first Afro-american IT major who gave up his specialty to become a master of Japanese Enka music.

Here’s his official website for anyone who wants more information about this unique singer:

Suffice is it to say that JERO breaks all stereotype of both Enka singers and Enka itself. Even better, his music is great.

Seriously, for those of you who haven’t had the chance to enjoy Jero’s music, you should check out his music clips/videos at Youtube. You definitely won’t regret it!
